Facts of Te Tiriti O Te Waitangi

1. 1215 - 1300 the first Polynesians arrived in Aotearoa 

2. 1769: captain cook arrived in Aotearoa

3. 28 october 1835: The declaration of independence was signed 

4. 6 of february 1840: Te Tiriti o waitangi was signed  

5. 1845: the New Zealand wars began

6. 1865: The Native land court was established

7. 1872: The New Zealand wars ended 

8. 1906: James Carroll made his speech in parliament

9. 1939: the first modern treaty settlement was agreed over land at Waitomo caves   


10. 2-6 of February 2013: prime minister Jacinda Ardern spent five days at a Waitangi meeting with Maori. It's the longest visit any prime minister has ever had so far.
